- Insist on a geophysical survey (VES) before drilling — it shows how deep the water is and saves you from a dry hole.
- Get the quote itemised: survey, drilling depth (per metre), casing type and size, gravel packing, flushing, pump, tank, stand and plumbing.
- Ask about depth and rock: in hard-rock areas like much of the FCT, wells are often deeper and cost more.
- Agree what happens if the hole is dry and get a written warranty on the pump and workmanship.
- Ask for a water quality test before you drink the water.
